When You Need Words Instead of Digits
Checks. Banks still require the amount written in words. Getting it wrong doesn’t void the check, but it causes confusion and potential delays. The spelled-out version is actually the legal amount if the written and numeric figures disagree.
Contracts and legal documents. Standard practice is to include both the numeric figure and the word form: “The sum of $45,000 (forty-five thousand dollars).” Lawyers are sticklers about this, and for good reason, it prevents disputes about decimal points and dropped zeros.
Financial reports. Some formal reports spell out key figures for clarity, especially in executive summaries and board presentations.
Language learning. ESL students practicing English number words. It’s surprisingly tricky, “thirteen” vs. “thirty,” “fifteen” vs. “fifty,” and the whole hyphenation situation with twenty-one through ninety-nine.
The Details
Decimals get read as “point” followed by each individual digit. So 3.14159 becomes “three point one four one five nine.” Negative numbers simply get “negative” prepended. The tool currently does English only.
