PNG to JPG Converter

Convert PNG images to JPG format for smaller file sizes

Shrink those PNGs by 50-80%

You’ve got a folder full of PNG screenshots. 2 MB each. 50 of them. That’s 100 MB you can’t email, can’t upload quickly, and probably don’t need at lossless quality. Screenshots, product photos, blog images, most of them don’t benefit from PNG’s lossless compression. They’re photographs or complex graphics, and JPEG handles those at a fraction of the size.

This tool converts your PNG to JPEG with optimized quality settings. The result is typically 50-80% smaller. A 3 MB screenshot drops to 400 KB. A batch of 40 product images that totaled 80 MB in PNG becomes maybe 12 MB in JPEG. Same visual content, dramatically less storage and bandwidth.

The catch? JPEG doesn’t support transparency. If your PNG has a transparent background, it becomes white in the JPEG output. That’s a format limitation, not a bug. If you need small files AND transparency, the PNG to WebP converter is the better route.

How to convert

  1. Pick your PNG with “Choose PNG File”.
  2. Check the preview.
  3. Click “Convert to JPG & Download”.

The server uses a balanced quality setting, sharp enough for web and screen use, compressed enough to save real space.

What happens during conversion

  • Lossy compression kicks in: JPEG throws away data your eyes can’t easily perceive, which is how the file shrinks so dramatically
  • Transparency gets filled: transparent pixels become white (since JPEG has no alpha channel)
  • Format changes, dimensions don’t: your 1920x1080 PNG becomes a 1920x1080 JPEG
  • Standard properties carry over: basic image metadata is preserved

Where this saves you

Email attachments. Gmail caps at 25 MB. Outlook’s even stricter at 20 MB. You’ve got eight PNG screenshots to send to your team lead. As PNGs, they’re 32 MB total. Convert to JPEG, maybe 6 MB. Now they fit in one email without anyone needing to dig out a file-sharing link.

WordPress and Shopify uploads. You’re adding product photos to your store. Each PNG is 4 MB because your photographer exported at maximum quality. The page takes forever to load. Convert to JPEG and your image payload drops by 70%. Your visitors on mobile connections will thank you.

Phone storage. Screenshots pile up fast. iOS and Android save them as PNG by default. If you’re running low on space, batch-converting old screenshots to JPEG frees up gigabytes over time.

Social media doesn’t care about PNG. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, they all re-compress your uploads into JPEG anyway. Uploading a 10 MB PNG just means you waited longer for the upload. Start with JPEG and save yourself the bandwidth.

If you want to keep the PNG format but just reduce its file size, try the Image Compressor. For modern web delivery with even smaller files, the PNG to WebP converter on Toolsvu gives you the best of both worlds, small files plus transparency.

PNG-to-JPG questions

My PNG has a transparent background. What happens?

Transparent areas become solid white. JPEG simply can’t represent transparency, it’s not in the format spec. If that’s a dealbreaker, use WebP instead.

How much smaller, roughly?

For photographs and complex images: 50-80% smaller. For flat-color graphics with large solid areas? Maybe 30-40% smaller. PNG is actually pretty efficient with simple images, so the gap narrows.

Will I see quality loss?

On photographs, almost never noticeably. On graphics with crisp text, thin lines, and sharp color boundaries, you might see subtle artifacts along edges. JPEG compression struggles with hard transitions between colors. For those types of images, you might want to stay in PNG.

Can I pick a custom JPEG quality?

This tool uses a pre-set balanced quality level. If you need to dial it up or down precisely, convert first, then run the result through the Image Compressor with its adjustable quality slider.

Does PNG metadata survive the conversion?

Basic properties like dimensions get carried over. Specialized metadata (IPTC, XMP) may not fully transfer between formats.
