PDF Page Numbers

Add page numbers to every page of a PDF document, header or footer

The Quick Version

Upload a PDF that doesn’t have page numbers. Get back the same PDF with clean, sequential numbers stamped on every page. Done.

Now for why you’d care about this.

Why Missing Page Numbers Are a Headache

You’re in a meeting, everyone’s looking at the same 40-page report, and someone says “go to the part about the budget.” Cue five people scrolling at different speeds, nobody on the same page, literally. If that PDF had page numbers, the instruction would’ve been “page 23” and everyone gets there in two seconds.

Scanned documents almost never have page numbers. The original paper might have had them, but scanners don’t care. Merged PDFs are even worse, you’ve combined three documents and now the page numbers jump from 12 to 1 to 1 again. Or there aren’t any at all.

How This Works

The tool overlays sequential numbers (1, 2, 3…) at the bottom of each page. It doesn’t modify your existing content, the numbers sit on top as a new layer. Scanned pages, text pages, images, charts, whatever’s there stays exactly the same.

  1. Upload your PDF.
  2. Click Add Page Numbers.
  3. Download the numbered version.

A 45-page scanned lease that was impossible to reference in emails becomes something you can point to: “see the clause on page 17.” Night and day difference.

Where This Actually Helps

After merging. You combined five separate documents into one. The pagination is a mess. Run it through here and you’ve got clean 1-through-N numbering across the entire file.

Legal and compliance filings. Some courts and regulatory bodies require sequentially numbered pages on every submission. It’s not optional, your filing gets rejected without it.

Print shops. When you send a document to print, numbered pages let the shop verify nothing’s missing or out of order. They’ll thank you for it.

Academic work. Citations need page numbers. If you’re distributing a PDF of your paper or thesis, proper pagination isn’t just nice, it’s expected.

Meeting handouts. “Turn to page 8” beats “scroll down past the graph, no, the second graph” every single time. Especially on video calls where everyone’s working from a PDF on their own screen.

Want to stamp “DRAFT” or “CONFIDENTIAL” alongside the page numbers? The PDF Watermark tool does that. If the numbered PDF is too chunky for email, compress it with the PDF Compressor.

FAQ

Where do the numbers appear? Bottom of each page, centered. Standard footer placement that works for most document types.

Can I start from a number other than 1? Not directly, numbering always starts at 1. If you need page 15-30 numbered as 15-30, you’d need to split the document first and work with the sections separately.

What about PDFs that already have page numbers? The tool adds new numbers without touching existing content. You’ll end up with both the old numbers and the new overlay, so it’s best used on unnumbered documents.

Does it work on scanned PDFs? Yes. The numbers are drawn on top of each page regardless of what’s underneath, text, images, scans, blank pages.

Can I pick the font or size? The tool uses a clean, professional default style. For custom typography, you’d need a desktop PDF editor like Acrobat.
