Reddit DMs without the Reddit account
Reddit chat has its own personality, that unmistakable orange accent, the u/username format, and a slightly more casual vibe than LinkedIn but more structured than Discord. When you need a Reddit conversation screenshot for a blog post, video, or presentation, staging a real one is awkward. Just build the mockup here instead.
This generator renders Reddit’s chat interface on canvas. Enter two usernames, type out messages as sent or received, and download the result as a PNG. The layout follows Reddit’s actual chat design with the correct colors, spacing, and bubble styles.
Setting up the conversation
The chat header shows the other user’s name in Reddit’s u/username format. Below that, the message area displays the conversation. Sent messages appear on the right with Reddit’s blue-ish highlight. Received messages sit on the left with a neutral gray background.
Each message gets a username label above the first message in a sequence, just like how Reddit actually displays consecutive messages from the same person. Add timestamps to show when messages were sent.
Reddit’s chat uses a clean dark-on-light theme by default, but the overall feel is distinctly Reddit, that orange accent color (#FF4500) shows up in the header and interactive elements.
Why create fake Reddit chats
Content creators covering Reddit drama or trends need screenshots that don’t expose real users. Journalists writing about online communities use mockups to illustrate conversations without violating anyone’s privacy. Educators teaching about digital communication patterns create example conversations.
Gaming communities use these a lot. “Look at this exchange I had with a player”, except they want to protect the other person’s identity or adjust the conversation for clarity. A clean mockup handles both situations.
Reddit moderators sometimes need to demonstrate chat interaction patterns for subreddit rules documentation. Showing “acceptable” vs “not acceptable” DM exchanges is way more effective with visuals than wall-of-text guidelines.
Reddit’s visual identity
That orange (#FF4500) is iconic. It appears in the chat header accent and send button. The rest of the interface is fairly neutral, white background, light gray for received message bubbles, and a darker shade for sent messages. Usernames display in a muted color, and timestamps are small and understated.
Reddit chat doesn’t have read receipts. Messages don’t show blue ticks or “seen” indicators. Conversations are straightforward: text bubbles, usernames, timestamps. No stickers, no reactions on individual messages, no voice notes. The simplicity actually makes mockups easier, fewer elements to get wrong.
FAQ
Does Reddit actually have a chat feature?
Yes. Reddit introduced chat alongside their traditional private messaging system. Chat is more instant-message style (like this mockup), while the classic PM system works more like email threads. This tool mocks up the real-time chat version.
Can I use Reddit’s Snoo avatar?
The generator uses a colored circle with the user’s initial as a profile placeholder. Reddit does have custom avatars and Snoo characters, but for mockup purposes, a clean initial circle reads well and avoids any trademark concerns.
Do the messages support markdown formatting?
The mockup renders plain text messages. Real Reddit chat supports basic formatting, but most DM conversations are plain text anyway. Keeping it simple makes the mockup look more authentic.
What’s the downloaded image resolution?
The canvas renders at 400px wide, matching a mobile chat window width. Height depends on how many messages you add. The PNG exports at this resolution, which is perfect for embedding in articles, presentations, and social media posts.
Can I add more than two participants?
Reddit chat does support group conversations, but this generator focuses on one-on-one DMs, the most common format people need mockups for. Two-person conversations cover the vast majority of use cases.
