Create WhatsApp Status/Story mockups with text on colored backgrounds

WhatsApp Status mockups in under a minute

WhatsApp Status is one of those features that 500 million people use daily, yet there’s barely any tooling for creating mockups of it. Need a status screenshot for a social media guide? Building a course about WhatsApp marketing? Want to show clients what a branded status update could look like?

This tool renders a full-screen WhatsApp Status view on canvas. You pick the background color (or gradient), type your overlay text, set the font size, and add details like the username, timestamp, and viewer count. The output matches WhatsApp’s actual Status layout, progress bar at top, user info, text centered on the gradient background, reply bar at the bottom.

Building your status

Start with the background. Choose from preset gradients, teal (WhatsApp’s signature), sunset orange, ocean blue, deep purple, or forest green. Each one matches the kind of backgrounds WhatsApp actually offers in the text status creator.

Type your status text in the overlay field. It’ll render centered on the screen with your chosen font size and color. Bigger text works for short punchy messages; smaller sizes fit longer paragraphs.

Set the username, timestamp (“Today, 15:05”), and viewer count. These render in WhatsApp’s exact positions, username top-left under the progress bar, viewer count in the reply area at the bottom.

Story segments control those little bars at the very top of the screen. Set how many segments the story has and which one is currently “active.”

Practical scenarios

Social media managers planning WhatsApp Status campaigns for brands. Mock up what the status update will look like before crafting the actual content. Show it to clients for approval without needing access to their WhatsApp account.

Digital marketing trainers teaching WhatsApp Business strategies. Your slides need example statuses that demonstrate best practices, concise text, readable fonts, brand-consistent colors. These mockups give you complete control.

App developers building status/story features. Use these mockups as design references when implementing your own story viewer. The proportions, timing bars, and text positioning are all based on WhatsApp’s real measurements.

Content creators making “did you know” posts about WhatsApp features. Screenshots look more authentic and engaging than just describing what a status looks like.

Visual accuracy

The progress bars at the top use WhatsApp’s exact segment width calculation, total width divided by segment count, with 2px gaps between segments. Active segments glow white while inactive ones stay semi-transparent.

The gradient backgrounds use two-color linear gradients that match WhatsApp’s built-in background options. Text rendering uses the centered, white-on-gradient style that WhatsApp applies to text statuses.

The reply bar at the bottom includes the “Reply” text input placeholder and the camera icon, positioned exactly where WhatsApp puts them. Viewer count (“12 views”) appears with the eye icon in the correct position.

Phone dimensions render at 390x844, matching a standard iPhone viewport. The result looks natural as a phone screenshot in any context.

FAQ

Can I use a custom background image instead of a gradient? Yes. Upload any image and it’ll fill the status background. The text overlay still renders on top, and you can adjust text color to ensure readability against your image.

What font does it use? The tool uses the system font stack (San Francisco on iOS, Roboto on Android) which matches what WhatsApp uses natively. The result looks platform-authentic regardless of where you view it.

Can I create multiple status slides? Each generation creates one status screen. To make a multi-slide status sequence, generate each slide separately and combine them in your presentation or editor.

Does the viewer count affect the progress bar? No, the progress bar segments and viewer count are independent controls. Set them to whatever values make sense for your mockup scenario.

Is there a limit on text length? The text wraps automatically within the screen width. Very long texts will fill the screen, just like in WhatsApp. For best results, keep status text under 200 characters.
