Download any YouTube video thumbnail in HD 1280x720 plus four smaller sizes as original JPG files

Grab the original thumbnail, not a screenshot

Screenshotting a paused video gives you a blurry frame with a progress bar burned into it. There’s a better way. Every YouTube video stores its cover image on YouTube’s servers in five fixed resolutions, and this tool pulls all of them directly. Paste a link, hit Get Thumbnails, and you’ll see live previews of each size with its own download button.

The top size is maxresdefault at 1280 x 720, the same dimensions YouTube recommends for uploads. Below that sit 640 x 480, 480 x 360, 320 x 180, and a tiny 120 x 90 version. Each one downloads as the original JPG, exactly as YouTube serves it. No re-compression, no watermark, no cropping.

Pretty much all of them. Regular watch URLs, short youtu.be links, Shorts, embeds, and live streams all contain the same 11-character video ID, and the tool digs it out automatically. You can even paste the bare ID if that’s what you’ve got. Timestamps and playlist parameters in the URL don’t break anything either.

One thing worth knowing: not every video has a maxresdefault image. YouTube only generates the 1280 x 720 version for HD uploads or videos with a custom thumbnail. Older uploads sometimes top out at 640 x 480. When a size doesn’t exist, the tool hides it instead of showing you a gray placeholder.

What people actually use this for

Creators pull their own covers back when the source PSD is long gone. It happens more than you’d think, a channel redesign rolls around and half the original thumbnail files live on a dead laptop.

Designers build swipe files. Save the top ten thumbnails in your niche at full resolution and you can study the composition properly: where the faces sit, how big the text runs, which colors keep repeating. A 120 x 90 preview can’t tell you that.

Bloggers and editors need crisp preview images for articles and timelines. Embedding the real cover beats a fuzzy screen capture every time. And social media managers collect competitor covers for pitch decks and audits.

A note on rights

Thumbnails belong to the people who made them. Downloading one for reference, research, or backing up your own work is normal practice. Republishing someone else’s artwork as your own is a different story, so get permission before you reuse a cover commercially.

FAQ

Why is the HD size missing for some videos? YouTube only creates the maxresdefault image for HD uploads or videos with a custom cover. Low-resolution uploads from years back often stop at 640 x 480, and the tool hides sizes that don’t exist.

What file format do I get? JPG, straight from YouTube’s image servers. If you need PNG or WebP, run the file through an image converter afterwards.

Does this work with Shorts? Yep. Paste the Shorts link and the video ID gets extracted the same way. The covers come back in the same landscape sizes as regular videos.

Can I download thumbnails from private videos? Nope. Thumbnail images are only served for public and unlisted videos. Private or deleted videos return nothing.

Is there a download limit? There isn’t. Grab as many as you want, one video at a time.

Do downloads include a watermark? No. You get the exact file YouTube stores, untouched. The filename includes the video ID and resolution so batches stay organized.
